April 8, 2019 - One Year

On this date one year ago I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. When the doctor gave me the news I said to Kathy, "I've had a good life." I thought I would maybe have three or four, or possibly five months. But with the Whipple surgery on October 4th, and God's grace, I have made it 12 months and am doing well.

My latest CT Scan showed no spread of cancer, and my blood test for cancer markers is in the normal range. I do have a blood clot in my jugular vein and a large hernia in the stomach area, but I'm feeling well and am so grateful for how things are going. Since pancreatic cancer is a microscopic disease and scans won't pick up microscopic cancer cells, I'm still going through chemotherapy, which can be pretty rough at times. I have an oncologist at MD Anderson and one at Emory, and they have talked about possibly stopping the chemo soon if my cancer markers are still good.

I've had many complications, setbacks, and hospital stays, but there are people with this same disease who have had it much worse. When I'm going through a rough time, I say "Eleven" over and over to myself. Eleven is the number in my family; my wife, my children and their spouses, and our 4 grandchildren. When I say "Eleven," it helps me to fight. I also remember my sister and her husband who have done so much to help me in bad times. I also remember all my friends who have been so concerned, so prayerful, so thoughtful, so generous, and so helpful. May God bless all of you!

Praise our God! This is your cancerversary, Cliff, and a date that will become part of you forever. You will relive that diagnosis, and rejoice in the fact that a year has passed. Yes, April 8th is your day to celebrate with the “Eleven”. Our prayers have never ceased, and for as long as I have breath, I will continue to pray. You are strong and courageous, and God has plans for you. It is definitely not your time to be called home!!

Lord Jesus, who was risen with healing in His wings, grant good health to Cliff and those who are afflicted with illness and consequently walk through valleys, so that they may be celebratory, complete, and effective servants equipped for every good work. We ask in the name of our mediator, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Like Taylor said, I too have always known you were tough. I learned that the first time I wrestled you when we were in college. Your fight this past year has been a tough one, but you have come out on top. You truly are an inspiration and I am proud to call you my friend. You are constantly in my thoughts and prayers. Hang in there Cliff. Love always,

Coach Ramos, I heard about you from my nephew Troy Miller. In fact his whole family tells me about what a great coach you were. You were Troy's coach at East Hall High back in the early to mid 80's. Anyhow I'm saying Hello from Troy and his family and wishing you well from the Millers. You are truly an inspiration!
